Lesson: “When Someone Shows You Who They Are, Believe Them the First Time” (Inspired by the words of Maya Angelou)

Song: “Check Your Fruit” by Edward Savsum

“Good morning, and Welcome to Starting Our Day Together: A Few minutes To Get The Day Started In The right Direction”

One of the most quoted statements from Maya Angelou is: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

At first glance, this quote sounds simple. But it contains profound wisdom about relationships, discernment, and human nature.

Too often, we ignore warning signs because we want people to be different from who they have consistently demonstrated themselves to be.

We become attached to our hopes, our assumptions, or our expectations rather than accepting reality.

Maya Angelou reminds us that people reveal their character through their actions, choices, attitudes, and patterns of behavior.

The question is not whether they have shown us who they are. The question is whether we are willing to believe what we see.

Biblical Foundation

Scripture teaches a similar principle.

“You will recognize them by their fruits.” — Matthew 7:16 (ESV)

Jesus taught that character is revealed through fruit.

Fruit is not what people say about themselves.

Fruit is what their lives consistently produce.

Anyone can make promises.

Anyone can make excuses.

Anyone can present an image.

But fruit tells the truth.

When a person repeatedly demonstrates honesty, kindness, faithfulness, and integrity, believe that evidence.

Likewise, when someone repeatedly demonstrates deception, selfishness, manipulation, or unreliability, do not ignore the evidence.

The Danger of Ignoring Reality

Many of life’s greatest disappointments come from expecting people to become what they have never shown themselves to be.

We say:

  • “I know they lied, but they’ll probably change.”
  • “I know they broke my trust, but this time will be different.”
  • “I know they keep showing the same pattern, but I’m sure they mean well.”

Hope is valuable, but hope must never replace wisdom.

God calls us to be loving, but He also calls us to be discerning.

Discernment is not judgmentalism. Discernment is recognizing reality and responding wisely.

A Lesson About Boundaries

Believing who someone is does not mean we stop loving them.

It means we adjust our expectations.

If someone is trustworthy, we can trust them.

If someone is irresponsible, we should not place responsibilities in their hands that they have shown they cannot manage.

If someone is consistently hurtful, we may need healthy boundaries.

Love does not require denial.

Grace does not require blindness.

Forgiveness does not require foolishness.

Personal Reflection

Consider the people in your life today.

Who has shown you faithfulness?

Who has shown you integrity?

Who has shown you kindness?

Thank God for those people.

Now ask yourself: Are there situations where I am ignoring clear evidence because I prefer a different reality?

Wisdom begins when we stop arguing with what is plainly being revealed.

Closing Encouragement

Maya Angelou’s insight and Jesus’ teaching point in the same direction: pay attention to patterns, not promises.

People reveal their character over time.

Believe the evidence.

Trust the fruit.

Walk in wisdom.

And remember that God desires for us to love people deeply while also exercising the discernment He provides.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the wisdom to see clearly and the courage to accept truth when it is revealed.

Help us not to be deceived by appearances, words, or wishful thinking.

Teach us to recognize character by its fruit and to make wise decisions in our relationships.

Give us hearts full of love, grace, and forgiveness, but also minds guided by discernment and wisdom.

May we honor You in the way we trust, serve, and relate to others.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Today’s Takeaway: Wisdom is accepting what people consistently demonstrate, not merely what they promise. As Jesus taught, character is known by its fruit. (Matthew 7:16, ESV)
