Review: They Will Kill You (2026)
A Christian Reflection on Fear, Family, and Spiritual Discernment
As someone who often reflects on films through the lens of Scripture, I believe stories, whether intentionally spiritual or not—often reveal something about the human heart. The 2026 thriller They Will Kill You is filled with tension and violence, but beneath the horror elements lies a deeply personal story about guilt, broken family relationships, and the desire for reconciliation. At the same time, the film introduces supernatural elements that require careful discernment from a Christian perspective.
The Story and Clara’s Family Past
At the center of the film is Clara, a young woman struggling to rebuild her life after years of strained family relationships and personal mistakes. Early in the movie, we learn that Clara’s relationship with her younger sister Maya has been fractured for years because of a painful decision involving their father.
Their father had once been a hardworking but troubled man whose life spiraled into debt and desperation. When the sisters were younger, he became involved with dangerous people to solve his financial problems. Clara, who was older and more protective, made a plan that she believed would save both herself and her sister from their father’s worsening situation. She chose to leave home and cut ties with him.
However, that decision had unintended consequences. Maya stayed behind, believing Clara had abandoned both her and their father during a time when they needed her most. Shortly afterward, their father died under mysterious circumstances connected to the people he owed money to.
From Maya’s perspective, Clara’s departure felt like betrayal. From Clara’s perspective, it was a desperate attempt to escape a dangerous environment and build a safer future. The tragedy is that neither sister ever truly understood the other’s pain.
This broken relationship becomes one of the emotional engines of the film.
Years later, Clara learns that Maya has become entangled with wealthy and powerful people connected to the mysterious high-rise building where the movie takes place. Some residents of the building appear to recruit vulnerable individuals, offering money and opportunity while secretly drawing them into dangerous games and rituals.
Clara takes the night caretaker job partly out of financial desperation, but also because she suspects Maya may be involved with the building’s residents.
A Mission of Reconciliation
As the story unfolds, Clara’s motivation becomes clearer. She isn’t just trying to survive the terrifying night in the building; she is trying to find and rescue her sister.
Clara carries deep guilt about leaving her family years earlier. She fears that her past decision set Maya on a path that led her into the dangerous world now surrounding the building’s elite residents.
Clara continually endangers herself by exploring restricted areas to seek proof that Maya is alive.
Flashbacks show moments from their childhood, two sisters trying to protect each other in a chaotic home. These memories contrast sharply with the present situation, where Clara must face powerful people who see human lives as expendable.
The deeper Clara ventures into the building’s secrets, the more she realizes that Maya may not simply be a victim. She may also be trapped in a system that manipulates people emotionally, promising belonging and protection in exchange for loyalty.
The climax of the film centers on whether Clara can reach her sister before it is too late—before Maya fully commits herself to the same ruthless system that once destroyed their father.
A Warning About the Supernatural Theme
Another important element of the film is the presence of supernatural and occult themes. As Clara uncovers the truth about the building’s residents, it becomes clear that their power and influence are not only financial or social. Some of the rituals and secret gatherings in the building hint at involvement with dark spiritual forces.
Certain scenes suggest that the elite group believes they gain protection, influence, or supernatural favor through ritualistic practices. These moments introduce an unsettling spiritual dimension to the story. What initially appears to be a conspiracy among powerful individuals begins to take on the atmosphere of a secret society dabbling in forces beyond the natural world.
From a Christian perspective, themes involving occult practices and dark spiritual power should always be approached with caution. The Bible clearly warns believers against involvement with occult or spiritual practices outside of God’s authority.
Deuteronomy 18:10–12 warns:
“Let no one be found among you who… practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells… Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”
While the film presents these elements as part of a suspenseful story, Christians should be careful not to treat spiritual darkness lightly. The Bible teaches that spiritual forces are real, but believers are called to place their trust in the power and protection of God rather than in supernatural mysteries or hidden knowledge.
Another reminder comes from Ephesians 6:12, which says:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age.”
The film unintentionally reflects this truth. Beneath the visible corruption of the building’s residents lies something darker—an atmosphere of spiritual deception and moral decay.
For Christian viewers, this serves as a reminder that not every spiritual theme in entertainment is harmless. Discernment is always necessary.
A Christian Reflection on Family and Forgiveness
Broken family relationships are a painful reality in many lives. Clara’s guilt and Maya’s resentment illustrate how misunderstandings and wounds can grow over time when reconciliation never takes place.
Scripture consistently emphasizes the importance of reconciliation and forgiveness.
Ephesians 4:32 says:
“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
Clara’s determination to find her sister is ultimately driven by love and regret. She cannot undo the past, but she hopes she can still repair what was broken.
Another powerful biblical parallel appears in the idea of seeking the one who is lost. In Luke 15, Jesus tells the story of the shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep to search for the one that wandered away.
In many ways, Clara’s journey through the building mirrors this idea. She enters a dangerous place, facing hostility and fear, because she refuses to abandon her sister.
The movie does not present this in explicitly spiritual terms, but the emotional core of the story reflects a powerful truth: love often requires sacrifice.
Final Thoughts
They Will Kill You functions primarily as a suspenseful thriller, but its most compelling element is the emotional story of two sisters separated by guilt, misunderstanding, and tragedy.
Clara’s desperate attempt to rescue and reconcile with Maya adds depth to the horror narrative. Beneath the violence, suspense, and supernatural tension lies a familiar human struggle—the longing to repair relationships that have been broken by past choices.
However, Christian viewers should approach the film thoughtfully because of its violent content and its flirtation with occult themes. While the movie portrays darkness realistically, it does not provide the redemptive hope that the Gospel offers.
Final Reflection: The film shows how easily families can fracture when fear, pride, and deception take hold. But Scripture reminds us that through Christ, reconciliation, truth, and spiritual victory are always possible.
