The “Starfish Story” (often called The Starfish Thrower), it teaches a powerful lesson about helping one person at a time.

A man was walking along a beach after a storm and saw thousands of starfish stranded on the sand.

Far ahead, he noticed a young person repeatedly bending down, picking up a starfish, and throwing it back into the ocean.

The man approached and asked what he was doing.

“I’m throwing the starfish back into the sea. If they stay here, they’ll die.”

The man looked at the enormous stretch of beach covered with starfish and said, “There are thousands of them.

You can’t possibly save them all. What difference can you make?”

The young person picked up another starfish, tossed it into the water, and replied: “It made a difference to that one.”

The lesson

The story reminds us that we should not allow the size of a problem to keep us from helping the person we can help.

We may not be able to feed everyone, encourage everyone, teach everyone, rescue everyone, or solve every injustice. But that does not make the good we can do insignificant.

There is also a strong biblical parallel:

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone…”  – Galatians 6:10 (ESV)

Jesus frequently ministered this way.

Although surrounded by crowds, He saw individuals—the blind man, the leper, Zacchaeus, the Samaritan woman, the grieving widow.

The crowd never caused Jesus to overlook the one.

The Starfish Story therefore carries a simple Christian application:

You may not be able to change the whole world, but through love, compassion, and faithful action, God can use you to change someone’s world.
