“We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.”
Introduction:
Family reunions are more than social gatherings—they are opportunities to remember God’s faithfulness, preserve family history, strengthen relationships, and pass a legacy of faith to the next generation.
This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending my family reunion.
There were relatives I hadn’t seen in years.
As we laughed, shared old stories, looked through photographs, and remembered loved ones who have gone on to be with the Lord, I realized that family reunions are much more than annual events.
They are living classrooms where history is preserved, relationships are renewed, and legacies are strengthened.
In a world where people are increasingly disconnected, God reminds us that relationships matter.
Without intentional gatherings, family stories disappear.
Many of us know the names of biblical figures because someone faithfully passed their stories from one generation to another.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly told Israel to remember.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (ESV)
“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children…”
Every family has stories of sacrifice, perseverance, faith, military service, overcoming adversity, and God’s provision.
Those stories become part of our identity.
If we don’t tell them, they may be lost forever.
Application:
Be the family historian.
Record the stories.
Save the pictures.
Ask the elders questions while they are still here.
Life becomes busy.
Children grow up.
People move away.
Schedules become overwhelming.
But reunions remind us that relationships require intentional investment.
Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together… but encouraging one another…”
Although this passage speaks primarily about believers assembling together, the principle applies broadly: people need one another.
Encouragement, love, and support grow when we spend time together.
Sometimes healing begins with simply showing up.
A legacy is more than money.
A legacy includes:
Children learn who they are by learning where they came from.
When grandparents tell stories…
When uncles and aunts share life lessons…
When cousins build friendships…
A legacy is being formed.
Proverbs 13:22 (ESV)
“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children…”
That inheritance includes spiritual wealth as much as material blessings.
The Bible often identifies people by their family heritage.
Abraham…
Isaac…
Jacob…
David…
Jesus Himself is introduced through a genealogy in Matthew 1.
Why?
Because God works through generations.
He is not merely the God of individuals.
He is “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
Our families become part of God’s ongoing story.
Too often, families gather only when someone dies.
Let’s change that.
Celebrate while loved ones can still laugh together.
Honor the elderly while they can still tell their stories.
Take pictures.
Share meals.
Forgive old offenses.
Create memories that your grandchildren will someday treasure.
Closing Thought
One day, someone in your family will tell stories about you.
What story will they tell?
Will they remember your faith?
Your kindness?
Your generosity?
Your commitment to family?
Legacy isn’t built in one day.
It’s built one conversation…
one meal…
one prayer…
one reunion…
one generation at a time.
Final Encouragement
Psalm 133:1 (ESV) “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!”
May we never become so busy making a living that we forget to build a legacy.
Spend time with family.
Honor your elders.
Teach your children.
Preserve your history.
And thank God for every opportunity to gather together.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of family.
Thank You for the memories we share and the legacy You allow us to build from one generation to the next.
Help us to cherish our loved ones while we have them, to honor those who came before us, and to faithfully pass on our faith, values, and history to those who follow.
May our homes and our gatherings reflect Your love and strengthen the bonds that unite us.
