“Let Your Light Shine” – April 17, 2026

Song: “This Little Light Of Mine” sung by Odetta

“You are the light of the world… A city set on a hill cannot be hidden… let your light shine before others…” — Gospel of Matthew 5:14–16

This isn’t poetry for its own sake—it’s a calling. But what does it actually mean for Christians living today?

Part 1: What Is the Light? (3–4 minutes)

 In Scripture, “light” represents:

  • Truth (God’s Word, not opinion)
  • Righteousness (living aligned with God’s character)
  • Love (visible, active compassion)

Jesus wasn’t telling believers to generate their own light. He was saying: reflect the light of God, much like the moon reflects the sun.

Key idea: The light is not about personal spotlight—it’s about divine reflection.

Part 2: Why Light Must Be Seen

Jesus gives two images:

  • A city on a hill → impossible to hide
  • A lamp on a stand → meant to illuminate

To hide your faith—through silence, fear, or compromise—is like lighting a lamp and putting a bowl over it.

In today’s context, hiding happens when:

  • Faith is kept private to avoid discomfort
  • Beliefs are watered down to fit culture
  • Actions don’t match confession

Key idea: Light fulfills its purpose only when it’s visible.

Part 3: What Does This Look Like Today?

Being “the light” is not about being loud—it’s about being consistent, visible, and transformative.

  1. Character in Daily Life
  • Integrity at work when no one is watching
  • Patience in conflict
  • Honesty when it costs something
  1. Love in Action
  • Serving people who can’t repay you
  • Forgiving when it’s undeserved
  • Standing with the hurting, not just speaking about them
  1. Truth with Grace
  • Speaking biblical truth without arrogance
  • Holding convictions without hostility
  1. Witness Through Presence
  • You don’t always need a sermon—your life is one
  • People often see Christ before they’re ready to hear about Him

Key idea: Light is most powerful in darkness—so don’t avoid dark places.

Part 4: What Light Is Not

Let’s correct some misunderstandings:

  • Not self-righteousness
  • Not attention-seeking spirituality
  • Not forcing beliefs on others

Light doesn’t blind people – it helps them see.

Part 5: A Personal Challenge (2–3 minutes)

Ask yourself:

  • Where am I dimming my light out of fear?
  • Where is God calling me to be more visible?
  • Who around me needs light right now?

This week:

  • Choose one intentional act of visible faith
  • Choose one conversation where you don’t hide Christ

Closing Thought

Jesus didn’t say, “Try to be light.”

He said, “You are the light.”

The question is not if you have light—

It’s whether you’re covering it.
