Finding Your Purpose: Deciding Who You Will Become

Song: ”Found My Purpose” By DJ Shawn

Scripture Focus: Proverbs 29:18a (KJV)

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Secondary Scripture: Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you, saith the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

As we begin this new day, I want us to consider a question that every person must eventually answer: Who am I becoming?

Notice I didn’t ask, “What do I do for a living?” or “What do I own?” or even “What have I accomplished?”

I asked, Who am I becoming?

Many people spend their lives pursuing careers, accumulating possessions, and chasing achievements, but never stop long enough to ask whether the person they are becoming aligns with the person God created them to be.

Purpose is not merely about what you do. Purpose begins with understanding who God has called you to be.

The Difference Between Occupation and Purpose

An occupation is how you earn a living.

A purpose is why you are living.

You can have a job without purpose, but you cannot live a fulfilled life without purpose.

Jesus spent only about three years in public ministry, yet every step He took was intentional because He understood His purpose. He knew who He was and why He had come.

Likewise, each of us has been uniquely gifted, uniquely shaped, and uniquely positioned by God.

The challenge is not that God has hidden our purpose from us.

The challenge is that we often become distracted by the noise of life and fail to listen for His direction.

Three Questions to Help Discover Your Purpose

  1. What Burdens Your Heart?

Often, purpose is connected to what moves us deeply.

What problem do you wish you could solve?

What injustice troubles you?

What need causes you to say, “Someone ought to do something about that”?

Sometimes God places a burden on our hearts because He intends for us to be part of the solution.

Nehemiah’s purpose began when he became burdened by the condition of Jerusalem.

What burden has God placed on your heart?

  1. What Gifts Has God Given You?

Every person has abilities, talents, experiences, and spiritual gifts.

Some encourage.

Some teach.

Some lead.

Some serve quietly behind the scenes.

Purpose is often discovered at the intersection of your gifts and the needs around you.

Instead of focusing on what you cannot do, ask: What has God already equipped me to do?

God rarely calls us without first providing the tools we need to fulfill the assignment.

  1. What Legacy Do You Want to Leave?

One day, our titles will be forgotten.

Our possessions will belong to someone else.

Our achievements may fade from memory.

But the impact we have on people can last for generations.

Ask yourself: How do I want people to remember me?

As a person of integrity?

A faithful servant?

A loving parent?

A godly example?

A source of encouragement?

The answer to that question reveals much about who you truly want to become.

A Powerful Truth

Many people are waiting for God to reveal a ten-year plan.

But God often reveals purpose one step at a time.

Psalm 119:105 says: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

A lamp doesn’t illuminate ten miles down the road.

It gives enough light for the next step.

Purpose is discovered as we faithfully take the next step God places before us.

Challenge for Today

Before this day ends, take five minutes and write down your answers to these three questions:

  1. What burdens my heart?
  2. What gifts has God given me?
  3. What legacy do I want to leave?

Don’t worry about having all the answers.

Just begin the conversation with God.

Purpose is not something you stumble upon accidentally.

It is something you discover through prayer, reflection, obedience, and faith.

Closing Encouragement

My friends, you were not created by accident.

You were not placed on this earth without meaning.

God has a purpose for your life that is greater than your fears, greater than your past mistakes, and greater than your current circumstances.

As you move through this day, remember:

You do not have to figure out your entire future today.

You simply need to become the person God is calling you to be right now.

And when you faithfully walk with Him, your purpose will unfold one step at a time.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for creating each of us with purpose and intention.

Help us to see ourselves as You see us.

Give us wisdom to discover the gifts You have placed within us, courage to follow Your leading, and faith to trust Your plan even when we cannot see the whole path ahead.

Guide our thoughts, direct our steps, and shape our character so that we may become the people You have called us to be.

May our lives bring honor to You and blessing to others.

In Jesus’ name we pray.

Amen.

Thank you for joining me on Starting Our Day Together. May your day be filled with purpose, peace, and the confidence that God is still writing your story.
