Movie Review: Lucky Strike (2026)

Directed by Rod Lurie and starring Scott Eastwood, Lucky Strike is a World War II survival drama inspired by true events during the Battle of the Bulge.

The film follows Captain John Castle, an American officer who is wounded and trapped behind German lines. Armed with little more than determination, military training, and a Motorola SCR-300 field radio, Castle must evade capture, navigate hostile territory, and find his way back to Allied forces while helping slow the German advance.  

Although critics have been divided over the film’s execution, many agree that it succeeds in creating a tense atmosphere and effectively portrays the loneliness, uncertainty, and moral weight faced by soldiers in combat.

Some reviewers praised its suspense and old-fashioned war storytelling, while others felt the screenplay and character development did not fully realize the film’s potential. I’m more in the camp of the latter.

Overall Review

Lucky Strike is less about spectacular battle scenes than about one man’s perseverance under extraordinary pressure. Much of the film centers on isolation, survival, courage, and the difficult choices that must be made when every decision may determine life or death.

Scott Eastwood delivers a restrained performance as Captain Castle, portraying a soldier who relies more on discipline and resolve than dramatic heroics.

The pacing occasionally slows, especially during Castle’s solitary journey, but those quieter moments reinforce the emotional burden of war. The film avoids glamorizing combat and instead emphasizes endurance, sacrifice, and the cost of freedom.

This film is especially recommended for viewers who appreciate historical war dramas that focus on character rather than nonstop action.
