Bible Lesson: God Qualifies the Called

Song: “The Called” by Matt and Josie Minikus

Objective

Help students understand:

  • God does not choose people based on their qualifications
  • He calls people based on His purpose
  • He then equips and empowers them to fulfill it

Key Theme

“God doesn’t always call the qualified—He qualifies those He calls.”

Part 1: Moses — The Reluctant Leader

The Situation

In Exodus 3–4, God calls Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt.

But Moses responds with excuses instead of confidence.

Moses’ Excuses (Exodus 4)

  1. “What if they don’t believe me?” (Exodus 4:1)
  2. “I’m not eloquent… I’m slow of speech.” (Exodus 4:10)
  3. “Send someone else.” (Exodus 4:13)

Teaching Insight

Moses focused on:

  • His limitations
  • His insecurities
  • His past failures

Part 2: God’s Response

What God Says

Exodus 4:11–12: “Who made man’s mouth?… Now go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what to say.”

Key Truths

God did not:

  • Argue with Moses’ feelings
  • Remove all difficulty

God did:

  • Promise His presence
  • Provide His power
  • Supply what Moses lacked

Teaching Statement

“God’s calling comes with God’s enabling.”

Part 3: Other Biblical Examples

Jeremiah

  • Said: “I am too young” (Jeremiah 1:6)
  • God: “Do not say, ‘I am too young’… I am with you”

Gideon

  • Said: “I am the least” (Judges 6:15)
  • God used him to defeat an army

Peter

  • Impulsive, denied Christ
  • Became a bold preacher in Acts 2

Pattern in Scripture

God consistently chooses:

  • The unlikely
  • The unqualified
  • The overlooked

Part 4: Why God Works This Way

1 Corinthians 1:27

“God has chosen the foolish things… to confound the wise”

Teaching Insight

God chooses the unqualified so:

  • He gets the glory
  • We depend on Him, not ourselves

Part 5: Application for Your Students

Common Excuses Today

  • “I’m not ready”
  • “I don’t know enough”
  • “I’ve made too many mistakes”

Biblical Response

“If God called you, He already factored in your weaknesses.”

2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

How to Say It in Class

You might tell your students:

“Moses wasn’t confident—he was called. And because he was called, God equipped him. The same is true for us. God is not looking for perfect people—He’s looking for willing people.”

Discussion Questions

  1. What excuses do people give when God calls them?
  2. Why do you think God chooses unqualified people?
  3. How does Moses’ story encourage you personally?
  4. What might God be calling you to do right now?

Closing Summary

“Moses tried to disqualify himself, but God had already chosen him. When God calls you, He does not expect you to have everything together—He promises to be with you and to give you what you need. Your qualification is not your ability—it is God’s presence.”
