When Being Right Can Wait

I’ve held my tongue behind my teeth,

And found my soul at rest,

For winning every argument

Won’t make my spirit blessed.

Sometimes the truth I think I know

Is tangled up in pride,

But Jesus washed my stubborn heart

And taught me love inside.

He sat with those who disagreed,

He listened more than spoke,

He met the woman at the well,

Broke bread with common folk.

So when I feel the urge to prove

I’m right and you are wrong,

I pray for gentler, wiser words,

A love that lasts lifelong.

For peace is not a trophy won,

But mercy undeserved,

A grace that says I see your heart,

Not just the facts preserved.

O Lord, teach me to hold my tongue,

To listen and to see,

That tolerance is not my loss,

But Christ alive in me.
